The 161 is the newest board in the Carve range, an extension in size over the previously largest 145 model, for larger rigs and riders. With the Free Formula series taking on a much more aggressive formula shape, the new Carve 161 fills the more all-round recreational gap left by the old Free Formula designs. Compact in length and thin in cross section, the 161 still retains a very curved outline. Well finished and light in the wood construction as supplied, we were very interested to see if the magic of the 145 could be recreated in an even wider hull.
Needless to say, the 161 is a big board and planes incredibly easily. It simply drifted through lulls, remaining on the plane at the slowest of speeds. It doesn't need an exceptionally powerful rig to drive it, as the hull is naturally efficient, and once going, has an extremely light and low drag feel through the water. Easy to trim by changing your position, the board has excellent balance over the fin and its short length adds to the compact feel; it is highly responsive for the width. The stance is very comfortable and stable; in no way technical, it is a board that any standard or style of rider can jump on and enjoy straightaway. Upwind the fin drive is excellent, pointing with ease, yet it is also exceptionally fast and controllable across and off the wind too. Hit a gust and bear off - the rig remains light and the board just accelerates; it is a real rocket ship, again so unusual for a board of this width.
Such is the addictive and rewarding nature of charging around on the 161, we found ourselves using it with large and very stable rigs to coax the most from it, yet is it just as happy at half speed, powered with very light loads. Around the corners the 82cm of width is noticeable when you compare it to the 145, for such is the speed of this board that there is little chance of appreciable bite until you can slow down! Under normal loadings, the turn is easy to initiate and the grip ample, if not aggressive.
Verdict - A fantastically efficient and versatile board for its size. As quick as the much smaller 1301 itre boards, but capable of planing in nothing. Non-technical for easy performance, it is living proof of how super-planer boards are now a practical reality for the mainstream freeride sailor. Highly recommended.
Intermediate: An excellent, super stable base to learn from , with tonnes of straight line potential, and reacting superbly to low levels of power. Expert: A very quick and exciting board, with an incredible wind range; a far cry from the dull super-planers of old. Plug and Play: A very easy board for cruising work, being non-technical to get the most from, but it does require concentrated persuasion through the gybe.
