The 2005 JP Radical Waves are a
totally new development. They are probably still the best on the market for
Hookipa, but with greatly improved handling and speed when conditions are less
than perfect. RICHARD

- improve back foot wave riding
characteristics
- upgrade the easy surfing
Richard's
Solution
Bottom The
rockerline is faster overall than last year's and also goes from non-planing to
planing with greater ease. Compared to past models, the rocker is flatter
through the stance and faster when standing more upright. This really improved
the back foot response. Still perfect for Jason's aggressive front foot driven
sailing. But now a lot faster when the waves aren't big and a lot more fun!
The vee carries further forward and the concave bottom sections are more
shallow than last year's boards. This combination made rolling from one rail to
the other much easier.
Outline Well
balanced and fast through the midsection. You can link 6 or 7 turns in small
surf and never lose your speed ! Plenty of curve where it's needed, sleek and
refined.
Rails A little
pinchier down low. With a lower apex and smaller radius the rail works with the
bottom setup to give incredible rail to rail turns at slow and average speeds.
The bite and precision at high speeds is typically JP.
RICHARD GREENE The smooth vee flow, subtle concaves and refined rails give excellent
small wave turning response and greatly improved planing. Easy rail to rail with
plenty of bite. They are easier surfing overall, that's for sure, but they won't
give up a thing when conditions get hot.
JASON POLAKOW In contrary to the JP Real World Wave boards the JP Radical Waves
have no limits concerning big powerful waves. We also improved them a lot for
the so called real world conditions, but they are not exactly made for really
small waves, super light onshore winds, and/or skateboard style wave sailing.
Their main priority is still in medium to big waves as they are my personal
choice for Hookipa.

JP Radical
Wave 74
When compared to the new Real World Wave series, as well
as previous season’s JP wave-boards, the Radical Wave looks decidedly gunny and
narrow. Very thin in the tail and rails, it sees a new stubbie tail shape whilst
retaining the same excellent finishing we have come to expect from the JP
brand....
On the water, the JP Radical
Wave 74 gave a very similar performance to that of its predecessor from last
year. With the introduction of the Real World Wave range, we were anxious to
find out if the ‘Radical Wave’ ..... It is certainly a dedicated wave board
.....
The 74 is certainly quick
around a break; the thin waterline induces little resistance through the water,
making the JP feel very composed under heavy loads, in the roughest of water
states. There is also a lot of feedback given to the rider – the 74 feels sharp
and precise underfoot .....
That said, although this is
about as extreme as the modern wave-board gets, it remains easy to use, and has
the manners and control to guide the more nervous sailor through the roughest
waters.
Verdict A dedicated, gunny and very capable
showpiece wave board, the 74 has the temperament and control to mask over the
most violent conditions, but comes into its own when the waves start to
build.
Intermediate: Perhaps a little extreme for some,
but a level of control that will be welcome by the more nervous pilot in testing
conditions. Expert: Huge stability at speed, awesome in the
most perfect conditions. Plug and Play: Easy to sail,
providing you have the wind.

JP Radical
Wave 74
All testers were sure -even without direct
comparison- that a lot has changed compared to the previous model. While
the 2004 board only could be recommended to a few blessed sailors spending their
winters on Maui or in South Africa, the new board is remarkably more universal.
Without doubt it remains a radical shape with strengths in big waves, now also
responding to back foot pressure. In typical North Sea conditions the board
sails okay, but the Real World Wave is superior. The Radical Wave comes into its
own in ideal conditions: Clean waves and moderate to ideal wind. In these
conditions this JP turns on the rail easily -via front and back foot
alike- and radii can be diversified. Even our very lightest sailor was
impressed by the maneuverability... In chop is feels agile... but smooth with
acceptable use.
Summary: A good shape for good
conditions. Slight weaknesses in light winds as well as at the upper limit.
Therefore the JP can be recommended for spots with constant winds. But then, it
(almost) can do everything!
